- Oh, mirror, mirror… you’ve stared back at history’s changing faces (quite literally), and you’ve made both myth and legend. Be it Narcissus’s self-destructive self-love—pools of water being the world’s first mirrors—or the superstitions around seven years, so many of us were marked by early mirror stories. (Not all of them so grim!)
- The first mirror objects were made from shiny obsidian, dating back to Turkey 6000BC. But all ancient societies boasted similar relics—yes,
vanity’s always been universal. How else would the Cleopatra set have lined their eyes with khol, if not for their ornate handheld bronze reflectors?
- By the 17th century, chamber mirrors became something of fashion craze, on par with rare gems and fine tapestries. Now of course these accessories of beauty (or is that beauty accessories?) are everywhere—stashed in purses, hung on walls (or ceilings)—sunglasses, even clutches sometimes send our reflections back at us.
- But it tickles me to see mirrors like these, themselves so nice to look at. If mirrors could be vain, these ones would have earned it…!
