treasures

This week’s treasure is this 19th C tables de jeux, or antique game table. Created specifically for the famed Albemarle Club of London, it’s said that that the clubs more prominent members – Oscar Wilde specifically, put this table to use. The Abermarle Club catered to both men and women and was known as the bohemian haunt in comparison to other  prestigious spots, which catered to only the affluent. Oh, if this table could talk…

It’s made from Cuban mahogany and gorgeous satinwood inlays, but what makes it most fascinating is the locking key mechanism.  A special set of custom brass keys at the center of the table opens each drawer, along with  one large master key that opens all six. Revealing the pieces to chess, dominos and cribbage to backgammon and horse racing. Each station also has a cocktail glass support and a compartment to store each station’s brass key. Fancy a game, anyone?
